What drew Powell to the university in the first place?
SEMO president Dr. Ken Dobbins met Powell in St. Louis when the former general visited Lift for Life Academy, according to the Southeast Missourian. The city's charter school is sponsored by the university. Dobbins told the Southeast Missourian he believes Powell will "say that education was the key" to advance his life from a boy growing up in Harlem to become a top official under two presidents of the United States. The former Secretary of State is expected to be humorous and anecdotal. He will also touch on the importance of forging alliances in a global community.
Why is Powell famous?
First, the military man served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton from 1989 to 1993. Powell then became Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005 under President George W. Bush. He famously made a pitch to the United Nations in 2003 to justify the United States' invasion of Iraq.
What speakers are featured after Powell?
The university's Speakers Series offers many well-known names and personalities for the 2012-2013 season. Former Major League Baseball manager Tony La Russa speaks Nov. 8. Comedy club The Second City performs Nov. 12. Figure skater Michelle Kwan makes an appearance March 6. Naturalist Jeff Corwin will speak April 10. All events are free to those associated with Southeast Missouri State University. The public is invited to attend for a small fee.
