CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuela's vice president said Thursday that President Hugo Chavez is fighting for his life while he continues to undergo treatment more than two months after his latest cancer surgery.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro said on television that Chavez "is battling there for his health, for his life, and we're accompanying him."

The vice president has used similar phrasing in the past, saying on Dec. 20 that Chavez "is fighting a great battle ... for his life, for his health."

Chavez hasn't spoken publicly since before his latest cancer operation in Cuba on Dec. 11. He returned to Venezuela on Feb. 18, and the government says he has been undergoing more treatment at a military hospital in Caracas.

Maduro also called for Venezuelans to keep praying for Chavez and to remain loyal to the president. He said Chavez's health had suffered because he had dedicated himself "body and soul" to his work as president.

Chavez himself has previously acknowledged that he was neglecting his health in recent years, often staying up late and drinking dozens of cups of coffee a day.

The president has undergone surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments since June 2011, when he first announced his cancer diagnosis. He hasn't specified the type of cancer or the exact location in his pelvic region where his tumors have been removed.

MSR Online ? Designing a healthy approach to life

?

The RootYou?ve set some new year?s goals for yourself?maybe some fitness goals, travel plans, or maybe even a new attitude about life! The new year always brings about renewed zeal for the things we?d like to do to enjoy a better quality of life

But as we?ve seen, without that bangin? inspirational song, or the help of ?liquid courage? (alcohol), those spur-of-the-moment, conquer-the-world leaps of faith sometimes fall flat. Goals without a plan don?t work.

Health and fitness are some of the top-10 New Year?s goals. And good ones to have! One of the things we?re doing at the Robbins Urban Wellness Retreat is helping people design their own wellness plans. As part of our overall lifestyle design model, we are helping people change their approach and relationship to their goals ? from their health and fitness goals to their total life goals.

?

Reframing the approach to health

Most people approach their goals as simply items to check off their ?to-do list,? such as ?I want to lose 20 pounds,? ?I want to quit smoking,? or ?l need to lower my cholesterol.? While some find success, it can be short-lived without the support, tools and coaching to maintain the results.

Helping people understand that developing healthy eating and fitness habits should be a way of life, not a temporary solution, demands a different level of thinking, a higher level of commitment to achieve longer-lasting results. The results are vastly different when you?re just trying to ?get through? something versus adopting it as a way of life.

?

Getting to the root of it!

By consulting with a lifestyle and nutrition coach, you?re able to work with someone who can design a plan for you tailored to how you actually live, around your actual circumstances, helping you set reasonable, attainable goals. By taking this total-life approach, the consultant may uncover habits or barriers to your success and/or signal other issues.

For instance, most smokers quit drinking to be effective at quitting smoking; or, women who have a hard time battling the bulge, despite diet and exercise, could be holding unresolved stress, stemming from other deep-seated issues.

As the saying goes, one thing leads to another. If the underlying causes of behaviors, issues or habits go unresolved, any efforts to deal superficially with them will be unsuccessful.

Creating a plan to support your goals is a way to hold yourself accountable to those goals and ensure that you succeed. It?s easy to kid yourself or not take yourself seriously, quickly relegating your goals to the background at the first sign of failure or distractions.

Or, you might even be tempted to give up. By working with a coach to design your plan, your goals become less intimidating, more realistic, and you?ll have fun along the way!

There is no greater feeling than when you?ve hit a personal milestone. The feeling of dignity and self-respect is irreplaceable and will likely inspire even greater accomplishments. The sky?s the limit, with the right support, information and tools, to lead a healthy life?one goal at a time!

Money: Profiles of Top Internet Business Concepts

Profiles of Top Internet Business Concepts

1. Ad Network
OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS MODEL
Ad networks are among the top methods of online advertising. The ?network?
component is organizing the sale of ads and finding high-traffic sites on which
to place the banner ads or hyperlinks for your clients. Ad networks are just like
other ad agencies. They research Web sites that attract the target demographic
of their clients. The revenue comes from the percentage of advertising dollars
that you retain during each campaign.
SKILLS NEEDED
Knowledge of online advertising techniques is an asset to run this type of business.
If you decide to offer banner ad design services, knowledge of graphic
design would benefit your business by eliminating the costs associated with
outsourcing to a graphic designer.

COST TO START THIS BUSINESS
You will have to pay for the development, design, and hosting of your Web
site. Computer hardware and software will be the main start-up expense.
You will need a software program that delivers the appropriate ads to the
sites in your network every time it has a visitor. The software should also be
able to provide reports of results for your clients. Estimated cost is a minimum
of $3,000 to $10,000 to start. Some of the sophisticated software, if
your clients want extremely targeted banner ad placement, could run you
over $100,000.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES NEEDED TO START
The minimum number of employees needed to start and run this type of business
is one dedicated individual.
INTERNATIONAL POTENTIAL
This business has strong international potential. Online advertising is an important
part of the marketing strategy for many businesses, in all countries.
E-BUSINESS MODEL/PAYMENT PROCESSING METHOD
As the advertising campaign needs to be developed with the client and decisions
must be made about where and when the ads will be appropriately placed,
e-business level 1 or 2 would be appropriate for this type of business.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED
The software you develop or purchase to administer the ad network should
be researched and be suitable to your level of operation. You should be
available by phone for prospective and current clients to contact you. You
should plan what you are going to do with the excess capacity ad space?for
example, you may want to offer last-minute volume discounts. Concentrate
on associating yourself and including in your network those Web sites that
have sustained high traffic levels. Always get paid up front for an advertising
campaign.
You will need to address the sophistication levels you want to get into with
the site advertising. Are you offering static ads, or are you going to provide
keyword advertising, geo-targeted advertising, behavioral advertising, and the
like? The level of sophistication will impact the software and the cost of that
software.

ONLINE MARKETING TECHNIQUES
? Developing a comprehensive affiliate/associate program would not only
increase the awareness of your ad network, it would also send referral
business to your site.
? Get linked from online advertising directories.
? Develop a sponsored listings campaign to bid on appropriate keyword
phrases with the popular search engines.
? Participate in newsgroups and discussion forums related to online advertising
or the industries that your ad network targets.
? Launch your own strategic banner advertising campaign on Web sites
frequented by your target market.

ADDITIONAL INCOME
You could generate additional income for your ad network by providing graphic
design services to businesses. You could design banner advertisements for businesses
that are not capable of handling this task in-house. This additional service
would add value to your online business.

2. Apartment Locator
OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS MODEL
Moving to a new city is never easy. Everyone needs a place to live, but not
everybody has the time to look. This is a problem that is being solved by many
businesses in major cities across the world. Many savvy individuals are launching
their own apartment locator Web sites and are turning quite a profit from
doing so.
Your main source of income will be referral fees from rental offices of apartments,
condominiums, and other real estate structures. You could also charge a
fee for sublets, apartment sharing, and private rental listings. Requests are sent
via e-mail from those seeking an apartment to you, the site administrator, with
a description of the desired apartment location, size, necessities, and so on, that
the individual is looking for. You then take the request and find the best possible
location to suit the person?s needs. Once you have found a match, you set
up a time for your client to view the apartment. You collect a referral fee if the
client signs a lease.
Another way to run this type of business would be to set up a searchable
database. Those with apartments to rent or sublet would pay a fee to add their
listing. People looking for an apartment would search based on specific criteria
such as location, maximum rent, number of bedrooms, etc.
SKILLS NEEDED
This business is great for someone with a thorough grasp of the available living
space in the local area and basic Web publishing skills. You should be a clear
communicator via e-mail and phone with your clients and the owners of rental
buildings so they take you seriously.
COST TO START THIS BUSINESS
Costs associated with starting this business range from $1,000 to $5,000. Initially
you will have to pay to design and develop your Web site along with all
costs associated with this (e.g., hosting service). If you want to develop the database,
there will be additional costs involved?the amount will be determined by
the level of sophistication, the number of fields, and the number of searchable

fields. Additional costs associated with opening this business include online advertising
costs and any offline promotion that you may implement.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES NEEDED TO START
Typically this business can be run by one individual to start and will increase
depending on the volume of referrals.
INTERNATIONAL POTENTIAL
Although people from other countries may use this service if they are moving to
the country, city, or state that you represent, this business generally has national
and regional potential.
E-BUSINESS MODEL/PAYMENT PROCESSING METHOD
E-business level 1 or 2 would be most appropriate for this type of business?level
1 if you are providing hands-on services and level 2 if you want to go the database
route and have the site run itself. For more information, see Part 1.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED
Although you want to receive as many referrals as possible, it is important not
to let the apartments that you represent take advantage of your site as a free
advertising opportunity. To avoid this problem, don?t list the specific names or
addresses of the apartment complexes that you represent. You can provide pictures,
and general location information. If you give the specific address of the
suggested match, your client may go directly to the apartment without even
using your service. Of course, if you run this Web site as a database, this will
not be an issue as you will be paid up front for all listings.
Collection of referral fees is an important issue. Ensure that you have contracts
in place with the apartment owners and safeguard procedures that help
you to keep your incoming fees organized.
Your Web site has to be constantly updated and maintained. When an apartment
is rented through you, make sure to show this on your site. When an
apartment is no longer available, remove it immediately from your site.
ONLINE MARKETING TECHNIQUES
? Develop links from as many Web sites and meta-indexes as possible
that target your geographic audiences.
? Purchase banner ads on geographically targeted Web sites (e.g., if you
represent apartments in New York, purchase a banner ad on a Web site
about living in New York).

? Participate in sponsored listings with the search engines by bidding on
appropriate keyword phrases.
? List your site in the classified ad section of nearby online newspapers.
? Participate in real estate or geographically specific mailing lists with a
cleverly designed signature file.

ADDITIONAL INCOME
You should consider partnering with businesses that could benefit from your
referrals. For example, local moving companies or furniture rental businesses
could benefit from your referrals, since you target the same market. This could
prove to be quite profitable for your business. An alternative to this would be
selling advertising to these businesses on your site.

3. Art Supply Store
OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS MODEL
Today everyone is buying products and services online, even artists. The number
of potential customers for an art supply store is tremendous. Many artists
frequent the Internet to buy supplies such as paint, canvas, brushes, carving
tools, and more. The Internet makes it easy for artists to buy products, especially
uncommon supplies that are not carried by your local art supply store.

Offering uncommon supplies also enables you to practice niche marketing and
can produce high returns for your business.
Here?s how it works. With the click of a button artists can easily browse
through your selection of art products, adding what they like to their shopping
cart. When they are finished they can simply check out, pay for the products
online with a credit card, and wait to receive the products in the mail. It?s as
easy as that.
SKILLS NEEDED
Knowledge of different art supplies and techniques is an asset, as you want to
provide the best customer service to your clients. You can?t do that without
understanding their needs.
COST TO START THIS BUSINESS
The cost to set up and run this type of business ranges from $2,500 to $5,000.
Initially you will have to pay for the design, development, and hosting of your
Web site along with your storefront solution and merchant account setup. All
additional costs are associated with promoting your business online and offline,
and purchasing and holding inventory.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES NEEDED TO START
To start this operation all you will need is one person. This operation is ideal if
you are looking to start a business part-time.
INTERNATIONAL POTENTIAL
This online business has strong international potential, as its products are of
interest to artists around the globe.
E-BUSINESS MODEL/PAYMENT PROCESSING METHOD
E-business level 3 is most appropriate for this type of business.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED
The site must be kept current. When items are discontinued or out of stock, the
Web site and storefront should be updated. The shipping operation of your
business should be timely. The prices have to be competitive with the same
products available off the Web. Keep in mind that shipping and handling charges
have to be added for products bought in your online store.

ONLINE MARKETING TECHNIQUES
? Develop as many links as possible from art-related Web sites and directories.
? Participate in newsgroups and discussion forums related to art with a
cleverly designed signature file.
? Host your own art advice column or daily art tips that will feature your
products and current promotions. You could leverage your exposure
through an RSS feed.
? Participate in sponsored listings by bidding on appropriate keywords
with the popular search engines.
? Develop a permission-based mailing list of potential customers and send
weekly e-specials or a newsletter with Art Tips and Resources.

ADDITIONAL INCOME
In addition to selling art supplies on your site, you could also help artists sell their
artwork. You could auction other artists? work from your site and then take a
percentage of the sale for your services. This would be a great way to earn additional
income and would also help to generate repeat traffic to your Web site.
ONLINE EXAMPLES

e-business strategy to provide art supplies to consumers.
Island Blue Art Supplies Catalogue
http://shopping.islandblue.com

This is a great site with a huge catalogue of art supplies that can
easily be purchased directly from their site.
4. Association Management
OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS MODEL
The number of associations related to different industries and interests is phenomenal.
Many of these associations cannot afford to hire (or do not have the
volume to warrant hiring) one or more full-time employees to handle the dayto-
day administrative duties involved with running the association. Associations
are now outsourcing all of these administrative duties to an association
management firm.
Here?s how it works. The duties that associations want taken care of are
administrative. Common tasks include billing, bookkeeping, and accounting,
taking minutes at meetings, collection of annual dues, association event promotion,
Web site maintenance, and distribution of weekly or monthly newsletters.
Since these tasks will be repetitive and not very time-consuming, you are able to
handle the association management for multiple associations, and because the
tasks will remain similar between associations, you will be able to work much
more efficiently.
IslandBlue.com offers a wide range of art supplies from its site.

The key to success in this business is organization. Make sure that you are
always on time with your work. If you don?t keep yourself organized or you
take on too much work, you increase the chance that you might not perform up
to the associations? expectations of your firm. This could result in the termination
of a management contract and ultimately will affect the professionalism
and overall appeal of your organization?s services.
SKILLS NEEDED
Excellent organization and communication skills are necessary for starting this
type of business. Other skills that would be an asset include knowledge of accounting,
creative writing capabilities, and other basic administrative skills.
COST TO START THIS BUSINESS
Since you are providing a service that has no inventory, your initial costs will be
minimal. The cost to start this type of business ranges from $1,000 to $10,000.
This type of business typically can be run out of your home, which eliminates
overhead costs of setting up an office for your management firm.
NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES NEEDED TO START
One person can run this business part-time to begin. This is a perfect idea for
someone working from home.
INTERNATIONAL POTENTIAL
This business does not have strong international potential due to the nature of
the service provided. Common tasks include taking minutes at weekly or monthly
meetings or attending other functions held by the association. This will require
your business to be located in the surrounding area of the association, so this
business has a more regional appeal. Of course, if this is a national association,
most meetings may be online, with one or two a year being face-to-face with
everyone flying to a common location. If this is the case, the business could
have national or international appeal.
E-BUSINESS MODEL/PAYMENT PROCESSING METHOD
E-business level 1 is most appropriate for this type of business.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS ISSUES TO BE ADDRESSED
With all your clients, make sure to have a detailed contract that clearly outlines
all the services and duties you will be providing. The contract should indicate
important dates and contact lists, and someone within the association should

be appointed to provide you with all the necessary information and approvals
to run the association efficiently.
ONLINE MARKETING TECHNIQUES
? Participating in newsgroups and discussion forums related to your target
audience would be a great way to increase the traffic to your Web site.
? Launch a strategic banner advertising campaign on Web sites frequented
by your target market.
? Develop links from as many Web sites, directories, and meta-indexes
related to your target audience as possible.
? Participating in mail lists and discussion groups related to different industries
and associations with a cleverly designed signature file would
be a great way to generate awareness for your services.

ADDITIONAL INCOME
In addition to handling the daily administrative tasks for associations, you could
also provide your clients with promotional services. This would help to promote
the association?s membership benefits to prospective members and would
also increase the awareness of the association. Providing a newsletter circulated
to association members where you may feature paying advertisers is a chance
for additional income.

2,000 pound turtle could be extinct within 20 years

Feb. 26, 2013 ? An international team led by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has documented a 78 percent decline in the number of nests of the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) at the turtle's last stronghold in the Pacific Ocean.

The study, published online February 26in the Ecological Society of America's scientific online journal Ecosphere, reveals leatherback nests at Jamursba Medi Beach in Papua Barat, Indonesia -- which accounts for 75 percent of the total leatherback nesting in the western Pacific -- have fallen from a peak of 14,455 in 1984 to a low of 1,532 in 2011. Less than 500 leatherbacks now nest at this site annually.

Thane Wibbels, Ph.D., a professor of reproductive biology at UAB and member of a research team that includes scientists from State University of Papua (UNIPA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia, says the largest marine turtle in the world could soon vanish.

"If the decline continues, within 20 years it will be difficult if not impossible for the leatherback to avoid extinction," said Wibbels, who has studied marine turtles since 1980. "That means the number of turtles would be so low that the species could not make a comeback.

"The leatherback is one of the most intriguing animals in nature, and we are watching it head towards extinction in front of our eyes," added Wibbels.

Leatherback turtles can grow to six feet long and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. They are able to dive to depths of nearly 4,000 feet and can make trans-Pacific migrations from Indonesia to the U.S. Pacific coast and back again.

While it is hard to imagine that a turtle so large and so durable can be on the verge of extinction, Ricardo Tapilatu, the research team's lead scientist who is a Ph.D. student and Fulbright Scholar in the UAB Department of Biology, points to the leatherback's trans-Pacific migration, where they face the prevalent danger of being caught and killed in fisheries.

"They can migrate more than 7,000 miles and travel through the territory of at least 20 countries, so this is a complex international problem," Tapilatu said. "It is extremely difficult to comprehensively enforce fishing regulations throughout the Pacific."

The team, along with paper co-author Peter Dutton, Ph.D., discovered thousands of nests laid during the boreal winter just a few kilometers away from the known nesting sites, but their excitement was short-lived.

"We were optimistic for this population when year round nesting was discovered in Wermon Beach, but we now have found out that nesting on that beach appears to be declining at a similar rate as Jamursba Medi," said Dutton, head of the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center's Marine Turtle Genetics Program.

The study has used year-round surveys of leatherback turtle nesting areas since 2005, and it is the most extensive research on the species to date. The team identified four major problems facing leatherback turtles: nesting beach predators, such as pigs and dogs that were introduced to the island and eat the turtle eggs; rising sand temperatures that can kill the eggs or prevent the production of male hatchlings; the danger of being caught by fisheries during migrations; and harvesting of adults and eggs for food by islanders.

Tapilatu, a native of western Papua, Indonesia, has studied leatherback turtles and worked on their conservation since 2004. His efforts have been recognized by NOAA, and he will head the leatherback conservation program in Indonesia once he earns his doctorate from UAB and returns to Papua.

He has worked to educate locals and limit the harvesting of adults and eggs. His primary focus today is protecting the nesting females, eggs and hatchlings. A leatherback lays up to 10 nests each season, more than any other turtle species. Tapilatu is designing ways to optimize egg survival and hatchling production by limiting their exposure to predators and heat through an extensive beach management program.

"If we relocate the nests from the warmest portion of the beach to our egg hatcheries, and build shades for nests in other warm areas, then we will increase hatching success to 80 percent or more," said Tapilatu.

"The international effort has attempted to develop a science-based nesting beach management plan by evaluating and addressing the factors that affect hatching success such as high sand temperatures, erosion, feral pig predation and relocating nests to maximize hatchling output," said Manjula Tiwari, a researcher at NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, Calif.

Wibbels, who is also the Ph.D. advisor for Tapilatu, says that optimizing hatchling production is a key component to leatherback survival, especially considering the limited number of hatchlings who survive to adulthood.

"Only one hatchling out of 1,000 makes it to adulthood, so taking out an adult makes a significant difference on the population," Wibbels said. "It is essentially the same as killing 1,000 hatchlings."

The research team believes that beach management will help to decrease the annual decline in the number of leatherback nests, but protection of the leatherbacks in waters throughout the Pacific is a prerequisite for their survival and recovery. Despite their prediction for leatherback extinction, the scientists are hopeful this species could begin rebounding over the next 20 years if effective management strategies are implemented.

Pierce lifts road-weary Celtics over Jazz in OT

(AP) ? The Boston Celtics weren't too tired after playing five games in seven days back and forth across time zones.

They had enough left to play overtime to close out a long Western road trip, beating the Utah Jazz 110-107 on Monday night.

Thirty-five-year-old Paul Pierce led Boston with 26 points, including seven straight in the extra session.

"It was huge," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "Whatever that was, it was the best win of the year for me. . To go into overtime and still have enough to win."

It wasn't just the ageless Pierce. Kevin Garnett, three months shy of his 37th birthday, stood strong at the end, refusing to let Rivers sub him out by insisting, "I am good."

Rivers didn't believe that, "but I kept him in and he was terrific."

Garnett had four points in overtime on 2-of-2 shooting, with three rebounds. He finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, a blocked shot and steal.

The Celtics also got a big game from Avery Bradley, who scored a season-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Pierce had a chance to win it in regulation, but his 19-footer at the buzzer rimmed out.

Alec Burks' reverse layup pulled Utah to 108-105 with 37 seconds left in overtime. Garnett's banked 3-pointer with 13 seconds left came after the shot clock expired, giving the Jazz another chance.

Paul Millsap was fouled before he could get off a 3, but made two free throws with 4.2 seconds remaining.

Courtney Lee added two free throws at the other end with 1.2 seconds left to bump Boston's lead back to three, and Randy Foye's 26-footer at the buzzer missed everything.

It was another one the Jazz let get away, though Monday's game had huge swings both ways from start to finish.

Overall, the game had 13 lead changes and was tied 17 times.

"We were in position," said Jazz forward Marvin Williams. "We fought back in the fourth quarter to force overtime but Boston just made big plays down the stretch."

Gordon Hayward led Utah with 26 points, Millsap had 16 and Al Jefferson finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Celtics (30-27) were playing their fifth game in seven days, but didn't seem to care down the stretch.

The Jazz (31-26) led 101-99 in overtime on DeMarre Carroll's 21-footer, but Pierce countered with a 3-pointer, then followed with a pull-up jumper over Carroll and a 15-footer to give the Celtics a 106-101 edge with 1:12 left.

Jefferson hit a 15-footer with 1:05 left to get Utah within 106-103, but Garnett's jumper helped seal it.

"We knew this was probably going to be the toughest game for us physically and mentally," Pierce said. "Talking about a long road trip, coming in to one of the toughest places to play. We felt we could salvage this trip with a win here. So guys did a good job of just being mentally tough, digging in and doing what we had to do to get the win."

The Celtics, who went 2-3 on the trip, also were smart down the stretch, fouling with fouls to give and finding a wide-open Lee on the inbounds pass when the Jazz needed a late steal in overtime. His free throws provided the final margin.

The Jazz trailed by eight entering the fourth but opened on a 13-2 run.

Jefferson's 10-foot turnaround jumper over Brandon Bass tied it at 93 with 2:46 left in regulation.

Pierce hit an 18-footer with Carroll diving at him for a 97-95 Boston lead with 36 seconds remaining in regulation, only to see Burks tie it with a tough layup with 19 seconds left.

"We wanted to win in regulation," Pierce said. "It would have felt better just to get a stop when we needed it. That's what we need to get better at. We didn't do it in Portland. We didn't do it tonight. That's what we need to start focusing on. When we get the lead and we need crucial stops, we have to figure out how to get them."

The game took a 16-point swing in the third, as Boston trailed 58-50 only to counter with a 20-4 run and lead 80-72 entering the fourth.

Pierce ignited the run with a 3-pointer, Bradley hit two more 3s and Lee added a dunk after a steal and another 3-pointer. Pierce capped the run with a jumper over Hayward for a 70-62 Boston lead.

The Celtics hit 6 of 13 3-pointers in the 32-point third quarter, while Utah made just 5 of 16 from the field.

It was the same story as Saturday, when the Jazz fought back early only to see the Los Angeles Clippers go on a 23-4 run and douse any hopes.

A Jazz team that had won three straight and seven of 10 has now dropped two in a row.

While Hayward showed he is recovered from a right shoulder injury despite missing a pair of shots in overtime, the Jazz still need point guard Mo Williams back from a thumb injury.

Monday, Earl Watson started over Jamaal Tinsley, but Burks ended up playing the position during Utah's big second-quarter run.

Pierce said Boston reverted to various defenses to slow the Jazz.

"We did a lot of zone, did a lot of man and tried to force turnovers," Pierce said. "That's what we have to do. A lot of times we had to go to small because they had plenty of size and they rebound well. We just junked up the game a little bit by changing our defense."

It may have been junk, but it was a win nonetheless.

"We have champions," said guard Jason Terry, who made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and two assists off the bench for Boston.

"When you have champions that have been through so many tough games as we have, then you know you're in good hands. For us, we hang our hat on executing down the stretch."

NOTES; Jazz F Derrick Favors picked up his third foul with 9:06 left in the second quarter. . Jazz G Foye needed four 3-pointers to tie Mehmet Okur (129, 2006-07) for the franchise single-season record. Foye went 0-5 Saturday but hit his first Monday and finished 2 of 6. . Bradley started 5 of 5 and had 10 points in six minutes for Boston, while Millsap started 4 of 4 for Utah. . The Jazz led 53-48 at halftime.

Nokia Lumia 720 unveiled 43inch ClearBlack display, 9mm thickness, 67megapixel Carl Zeiss, wireless charging capable

Notice Vogue in that live tile up there? That's because Nokia's toning down its focus on imaging innovation at this year's MWC (remember the PureView 808?) for a hyper-targeted take on the mid-range: the Lumia 720. Made for über-social types prone to late night party shots, selfies and multimedia uploads, this 4.3-inch device builds on the polycarbonate unibody of its 920 elder, albeit in a much slimmer and smoother form factor. Measuring just 9mm in thickness and weighing 128 grams (4.5 ounces), the 720 also bears the distinction of being Nokia's most svelte Windows Phone 8 device to date. It also packs a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon CPU (the same as the Lumia 520), 512MB RAM, 800 x 480 ClearBlack display, 2,000mAh battery, NFC and an option for wireless charging (enabled by a separate snap-on cover) into the trendiest design the company could create.

To push that trendsetting message forward, Nokia's imbued the 720 with a dual camera setup that's ideal for the party circuit (e.g., lowlight shots and self-portraits). Up front, there's a 1.3-megapixel camera with wide-angle lens and a 6.7-megapixel rear shooter with f/1.9 lens on back, specifically crafted by Carl Zeiss labs to take in more light. And as a further lure for the vainglorious types that may pick it up, the 720 will also ship with a new digital lens pre-loaded: Glam Me.

As the name implies, this proprietary filter allows users to edit their images (whiten teeth, oversaturate colors, widen eyes, etc.) before sharing on social networking sites. In addition to that proprietary camera software perk, Nokia's also tacked-on its full suite of Here apps (Drive, Transit and Maps), as well as Nokia Music -- all exclusives to the Lumia line.

Nokia fans keen on a US release will have to sit and wait this one out (or opt for the Lumia 520 on T-Mobile). At present, the Lumia 720's only set to launch in Asia (specifically China) and parts of Europe in five colors (cyan, black, yellow, red and glossy white) for €249 (about $330 USD) this Q2 2013. Head on past the break for the official PR.

Laser mastery narrows down sources of superconductivity

Feb. 24, 2013 ? Identifying the mysterious mechanism underlying high-temperature superconductivity (HTS) remains one of the most important and tantalizing puzzles in physics. This remarkable phenomenon allows electric current to pass with perfect efficiency through materials chilled to subzero temperatures, and it may play an essential role in revolutionizing the entire electricity chain, from generation to transmission and grid-scale storage. Pinning down one of the possible explanations for HTS -- fleeting fluctuations called charge-density waves (CDWs) -- could help solve the mystery and pave the way for rapid technological advances.

Now, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have combined two state-of-the-art experimental techniques to study those electron waves with unprecedented precision in two-dimensional, custom-grown materials. The surprising results, published online February 24, 2013, in the journal Nature Materials, reveal that CDWs cannot be the root cause of the unparalleled power conveyance in HTS materials. In fact, CDW formation is an independent and likely competing instability.

"It has been difficult to determine whether or not dynamic or fluctuating CDWs even exist in HTS materials, much less identify their role," said Brookhaven Lab physicist and study coauthor Ivan Bozovic. "Do they compete with the HTS state, or are they perhaps the very essence of the phenomenon? That question has now been answered by targeted experimentation."

Custom-grown Superconductors

Electricity travels imperfectly through traditional metallic conductors, losing energy as heat due to a kind of atomic-scale friction. Impurities in these materials also cause electrons to scatter and stumble, but superconductors can overcome this hurdle -- assuming the synthesis process is precise.

For this experiment, Bozovic used a custom-built molecular beam epitaxy system at Brookhaven Lab to grow thin films of LaSrCuO, an HTS cuprate (copper-oxide) compound. The metallic cuprates, assembled one atomic layer at a time, are separated by insulating planes of lanthanum and strontium oxides, resulting in what's called a quasi-two-dimensional conductor. When cooled down to a low enough temperature -- less than 100 degrees Kelvin -- strange electron waves began to ripple through that 2D matrix. At even lower temperatures, these films became superconducting.

Electron Sea

"In quasi-two-dimensional metals, low temperatures frequently bring about interesting collective states called charge-density waves," Bozovic said. "They resemble waves rolling across the surface of a lake under a breeze, except that instead of water, here we actually have a sea of mobile electrons."

Once a CDW forms, the electron density loses uniformity as the ripples rise and fall. These waves can be described by familiar parameters: amplitude (height of the waves), wavelength (distance between waves), and phase (the wave's position on the material). Detecting CDWs typically requires high-intensity x-rays, such as those provided by synchrotron light sources like Brookhaven's NSLS and, soon, NSLS-II. And even then, the technique only works if the waves are essentially frozen upon formation. However, if CDWs actually fluctuate rapidly, they may escape detection by x-ray diffraction, which typically requires a long exposure time that blurs fast motion.

Measuring Rolling Waves

To catch CDWs in action, a research group at MIT led by physicist Nuh Gedik used an advanced ultrafast spectroscopy technique. Intense laser pulses called "pumps" cause excitations in the superconducting films, which are then probed by measuring the film reflectance with a second light pulse -- this is called a pump-probe process. The second pulse is delayed by precise time intervals, and the series of measurements allow the lifetime of the excitation to be determined.

In a more sophisticated variant of the technique, largely pioneered by Gedik, the standard single pump beam is replaced by two beams hitting the surface from different sides simultaneously. This generates a standing wave of controlled wavelength in the film, but it disappears rapidly as the electrons relax back into their original state.

This technique was applied to the atomically perfect LaSrCuO films synthesized at Brookhaven Lab. In films with a critical temperature of 26 degrees Kelvin (the threshold beyond which the superconductivity breaks down), the researchers discovered two new short-lived excitations -- both caused by fluctuating CDWs.

Gedik's technique even allowed the researchers to record the lifetime of CDW fluctuations -- just 2 picoseconds (a millionth of a millionth of a second) under the coldest conditions and becoming briefer as the temperatures rose. These waves then vanished entirely at about 100 Kelvin, actually surviving at much higher temperatures than superconductivity.

Ruling out a Suspect

The researchers then hunted for those same signatures in cuprate films with slightly different chemical compositions and a greater density of mobile electrons. The results were both unexpected and significant for the future of HTS research.

"Interestingly, the superconducting sample with the highest critical temperature, about 39 Kelvin, showed no CDW signatures at all," Gedik said.

The consistent emergence of CDWs would have bolstered the conjecture that they play an essential role in high-temperature superconductivity. Instead, the new technique's successful detection of such electron waves in one sample but not in another (with even higher critical temperature) indicates that another mechanism must be driving the emergence of HTS.

"Results like this bring us closer to understanding the mystery of HTS, considered by many to be one of the greatest problems in physics today," Bozovic said. "The source of this extraordinary phenomenon is slowly but surely running out of places to hide."

Sterling struggles after UK debt downgrade

(AP) ? The British pound is recovering after dropping against the world's leading currencies as markets reacted to a downgrade of the U.K.'s cherished triple-A credit rating.

During early trading Monday, sterling dropped to $1.5069 against the dollar ? its lowest level since July 2010 ? before bouncing back to $1.5144. Against the euro, the pound hovered around 18-month lows with one euro worth 0.8745 pound.

The pound was in focus in the wake of last Friday's decision by Moody's to downgrade the U.K.'s credit rating by one notch from the top AAA to AA1. The agency says sluggish growth and rising debt are weakening the British economy's outlook.

Two other major rating agencies ? Fitch and Standard & Poor's ? have also warned that they may downgrade the U.K. as well.

THE RESET: Obama counts down to gov't budget cuts

Four days and counting. But who's counting? President Barack Obama for one.

That's how long before government-wide budget cuts begin to hit home that will slash spending by roughly $85 billion over the next seven months.

And more are on the way if Congress and the president can't figure out how to replace Friday's indiscriminate autopilot cuts ? called a "sequester" in government jargon ? with more targeted measures.

Obama told the nation's governors on Monday, "Unfortunately, in just four days Congress is poised to allow serious and arbitrary automatic budget cuts to kick in that will slow our economy, eliminate good jobs and leave a lot of folks who are already pretty thinly stretched scrambling to figure out what to do."

The two parties remain far apart. Obama insists on both spending cuts and higher tax revenue through trimming deductions and loopholes used mostly by the wealthy. Republicans see that as a tax increase and are balking.

So Democrats and Republicans are hurling accusations at each other as Congress returns from a nine-day recess and members begin to focus on the next manufactured fiscal deadline ? March 27, by which time lawmakers must pass legislation to keep the entire government operating.

Obama is painting as gloomy a picture as possible of the impending cuts, even though they represent a relatively small percentage of the government's $3.5 trillion budget.

Over the weekend, the White House put out lists of how the cuts would affect individual states.

Everybody hates the sequester ? former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Alan Blinder jokes "that's Latin for 'cutting federal spending stupidly'" ? but nobody's yet figured how to make it go away.

And, actually, the cuts ? together with other deficit-reducing steps by Obama and Congress over the past year and a slowly recovering economy ? are contributing to an improvement in the government's budget picture.

For the first time in four years, the budget deficit is on course to sink below $1 trillion.

Dean Brownworth came off the bench in Calhoun's game against Herricks on Jan. 18, scored three points and sent the crowd into a tizzy.

It had nothing to do with the game going into overtime, and, in truth, after building a big halftime lead, Calhoun let the game slip away in the end.

The cheers were for Brownworth alone. Little more than a year after doctors removed a malignant tumor...

U.S. urges Syrian opposition to attend Rome talks

LONDON (Reuters) - A senior U.S. official on Sunday urged the Syrian opposition to attend a planned international meeting in Rome this week, saying it was a chance for rebels to make their case for more support.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was dissension among the opposition about the utility of such meetings and some members have signaled they may not attend.

Nearly 70,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war in the last 22 months since fighting broke out between rebels trying to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and government forces and allied militias.

There appear to be growing tensions between the fighters on the ground and opposition members outside the country.

"The Syrian opposition leadership is under severe pressure now from its membership, from the Syrian people, to get more support from the international community and in that context there's quite a bit of internal discussion about the value of going to international conferences," the official told reporters travelling with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

"The point that we're trying to make ... is that they have an opportunity in Rome with the meeting that the Italians have offered to host to see the very countries that have been their greatest supporters," the official said.

The Syrian National Coalition said on February 22 that it had turned down invitations to visit Washington and Moscow to protest what it described as international silence over the destruction of the historic city of Aleppo by government missile strikes.

On Saturday, the U.S. State Department issued a statement condemning a Syrian army Scud missile attack that killed dozens of people on Friday in Aleppo, and invited the opposition for talks on finding a negotiated settlement to the conflict.

CHANCE TO MEET KERRY

Invitations from Washington and Moscow had been extended to opposition coalition leader Mouz Alkhatib after he met the Russian and U.S. foreign ministers in Munich earlier this month.

Alkhatib, a cleric from Damascus who has said he is morally obliged to try to seek an exit for Assad without more bloodshed, has been criticized by others in the SNC for acting alone.

Thursday's planned meeting, which Kerry is expected to attend along with European, Arab and Turkish officials, is a chance for the opposition "to make their case for where they are in terms of the support we are giving them, what more they think they need and why," the senior U.S. official said.

The talks would also allow the opposition to meet Kerry, who took office on February 1 and is making his first trip as secretary of state to Europe and the Middle East.

"They are obviously going to have to make (their own) decision but we very much hope that we'll have an opportunity to hear from them and to work with them going forward," the official said.

The official said U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford, who was withdrawn from the country more than a year ago because of the violence, was travelling to Cairo on Sunday night to meet the opposition while the top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East, Beth Jones, would soon fly to Rome.

Kerry arrived in London on Sunday and is scheduled to travel to Berlin, Paris, Rome, Ankara, Cairo, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi and Doha before returning to Washington on March

Rocket attacks on an eastern districts of Aleppo, Syria's industrial and commercial hub, killed at least 29 people on Friday and trapped a family of 10 in the ruins of their home, opposition activists in the city said.

Google AdSense Publisher Claims JavaScript Framebuster Lead To Google Ban

Google AdSense logoA WebmasterWorld thread has one Google AdSense publisher claiming that a JavaScript framebuster technique led to his site and AdSense account being banned by Google.

He said after several years, his account was banned by Google AdSense because the JavaScript framebuster code he had led the page to reload and reload in an endless loop. It lead to crazy numbers of impressions over a 40 minute period. The publisher wrote:

The account was disabled on Jan 18 2013. But Google Analytics intelligence report showed a spike in pageviews (and they weren't clicks but pageviews do inflate advertiser costs) on 18th Jan 2013. After digging deep, I realised that someone from France (I'm in India) was using the Google Translate service to view my site. And my site has a framebuster javascript which caused the page to load in an endless loop. The usual pageviews of about 800 per day got inflated to 4500 that day. I've sent them a clarification. But I doubt they'll listen of their highhandedness. I was at fault but I'm not a cheat. I've paid my apologies and the last respects to AdSense.

Some are having a hard time believing a publisher would be banned so quickly for such a mistake. Some are saying it is possible and are trying to ensure things like this do not happen to themselves.

Netmeg said that she is extra careful:

Stuff like this is why I watch my traffic like a hawk (not my AdSense, my traffic) and if I see any anomalies, AdSense comes off till I nail them down.

I guess that is being incredibly careful.

Are you paranoid about this? Have you seen anything like this before?

Pluto moon vote helps the case for Vulcan

M. Showalter / NASA / ESA

An image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, surrounded by four smaller moons. P4 and P5 will be getting new names. One of them might be called Vulcan.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

The organizer of a contest to name Pluto's two tiniest moons can't guarantee that either one of them will be called "Vulcan" ??but if the name nominated by the original captain on the "Star Trek" TV show retains its lead in the voting, planetary scientist Mark Showalter promises to argue the best case he can.

"My starting position is that we should work with the names that received the most votes," Showalter told NBC News on Friday.

The "Pluto Rocks" voting is due to conclude at noon ET Monday, to be followed by a 1 p.m. Google+ Hangout sponsored by the SETI Institute, the place where Showalter works. Right now, Vulcan holds a commanding lead with about 140,000 of the 370,000 votes cast. But even if Vulcan holds onto that edge, don't expect Showalter to declare immediately that Vulcan is the choice.

"There will not be an announcement on Monday," he said.

For one thing, it's not totally up to Showalter to make the nomination. He's just one of the leading scientists on the discovery teams for P4 and P5, the two moons that were found in 2011 and 2012. All the members from each of the teams will have to agree on the names to be submitted to the International Astronomical Union for approval. Even then, the IAU could voice concerns about the names they submit, leading to alternate suggestions. Showalter said he's actually seen that happen in the case of the Uranian moon that ended up being called Cupid.

Kirk ... takes ... command
Vulcan wasn't on Showalter's initial list of prospects, but he added it to the ballot at the urging of William Shatner, the actor who played Captain James T. Kirk on the original "Star Trek" series in the late 1960s. Shatner favored the name because it was the fictional home planet of Kirk's pointy-eared science officer, Mr. Spock. "Let's hope the IAU thinks Vulcan is a good name," Shatner wrote in a tweet to his 1.35 million Twitter followers.

Showalter said Shatner's endorsement definitely skewed the results. "Early on, it's pretty clear there were some Trek fans who seem to have resorted to augmented voting technologies," Showalter said. But he's convinced that the groundswell of support for Vulcan is genuine, and he said he's "come up with a pretty good case" for using the name.

"I want people to feel that their vote counted," Showalter said.

The IAU's guidelines for Pluto's moons stipulate that they should be named after Greek or Roman gods who have some connection to the mythological underworld. Those guidelines worked for Pluto's three other moons, Charon (ferryman of the dead), Nix (goddess of darkness) and Hydra (a many-headed monster).

Vulcan has a family relationship to the underworld, in that he was Pluto's nephew. And in his capacity as the god of fire, Vulcan tended to hang out in the depths beneath Mount Etna and other volcanoes, rather than on the heights of Mount Olympus. That may not be Hell, exactly, but it's certainly the underworld.

Showalter admitted that it might be tricky to have the god of fire associated with one of the coldest places in the solar system. "It may well be there's a consensus that it's a great name, but not a great name for a moon of Pluto," he said. Also, the name Vulcan has been associated with a hypothetical planet that was thought to circle the sun within Mercury's orbit. The 19th-century French astronomer who discovered Neptune, Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier, spent fruitless years looking for it. Pluto's moon is in an entirely different place, but Showalter sees that as a potential plus.

"Maybe we'd be doing Le Verrier a favor by saying that when he was looking for the ninth planet inside Mercury's orbit, he was looking in the wrong direction," Showalter joked.

Some have said the name Vulcan should be reserved for a planet beyond our own solar system. In response, Showalter points out that there's no IAU procedure for giving names to extrasolar planets (beyond generic designations such as?Kepler-37b or Gliese 163c). That situation may change if planet-naming ventures such as Uwingu take hold. But in the meantime, Showalter feels that Vulcan should at least be given a fair shot at solar system fame.

Another moon to name
So it's virtually a sure thing that Showalter will try making the case for Vulcan. But what about the other Plutonian moon?

Right now, Cerberus is hanging onto the No. 2 spot in the voting, and unless Styx or some other name comes from behind in the next few days, Showalter will argue the case for Cerberus as well. That name fits perfectly with the mythological underworld theme, because Cerberus was the three-headed hound that guarded the gates of the underworld.

One drawback is that there's already an asteroid named Cerberus, and the IAU doesn't want newly named celestial bodies to be confused with previously named objects. Showalter said there are at least two ways around that issue: One is to argue that the asteroid and the moon wouldn't be confused. The precedent for this is Io, a mythological name that refers to a Jovian moon as well as an asteroid. Another way out is to change the spelling slightly ? say, to the Greek name Kerberos. One precedent for this is the Plutonian moon Nix, which uses an alternate spelling to avoid confusion with the asteroid Nyx. (By the way, there's already an asteroid named Vulcano, but that name is considered different enough from Vulcan,)

Opening the moon-naming process up to a vote has been a lot of work, even if it's a non-binding vote, and Showalter said he doubts that he'll do it again. But he's gratified by the response: The contest?attracted hundreds of thousands of votes from scores of countries around the world, generated more than 30,000 write-in suggestions for names, and gave Pluto fans and "Star Trek" fans lots to think about.

What would Spock think about all this? Leonard Nimoy, the actor who played the alien on the original "Star Trek" show, said via Twitter that "'Vulcan' is the logical choice."?I can imagine Spock saying that, but I can also imagine him uttering just one word. ...

Spock said, "Fascinating," a lot! Here are the times he said it. Enjoy!
