On Monday, McNamara may have broken his own record for the largest wave ever surfed. McNamara returned to Nazar?, Portugal, where he set a record a little more than a year ago.

As The Christian Science Monitor reported last May: The Guinness World Records recognized a 44-year-old Hawaii pro surfer for catching a 78-foot wave off the coast of Portugal, saying the November [2011] feat beats a 2008 record for the biggest ridden by more than 1 foot.

Nazare is known as a prime spot for big rides.? The waves roll in off the Atlantic Ocean and travel along an undersea canyon that generate some of the biggest waves on the planet. The Nazare canyon is about 16,000 feet deep in places, and about 140?miles long.

On Monday, :"The conditions in Nazar? were heavenly perfect. Light southern winds and strong swell coming from northwest and hitting the local canyon as it should," according to SurferToday.com.

McNamara is waiting confirmation of the size of the latest wave and whether a new record was set.

McNamara, who began surfing at age 11 and went pro at 17, said the achievement became more important to him when he realized it could help him urge more people to follow their passions.

"The world would be a much better place if everyone was doing what they wanted to do," he told the Associated Press last year after he set the record.

Syrian state media report airstrike by Israeli military

JERUSALEM ? Amid rising fear that Syrian President Bashar Assad could lose control of his nation?s stockpiles of chemical and advanced weapons, Israel bombed and destroyed a military research center outside Damascus, the capital, Syrian state media reported Wednesday.

Israeli and U.S. military and government officials declined to comment on the report.

If it occurred, the attack would mark Israel?s most aggressive military strike against its neighbor during the Syrian uprising against Assad's rule that began nearly two years ago.

Earlier in the day, international news agencies and Arab news outlets reported that the Israeli strike had targeted a weapons convoy along the Syrian-Lebanese border as it attempted to deliver cargo to the militant group Hezbollah. Those reports could not be confirmed. Syrian officials denied the reports of a convoy as ?baseless.?

Israeli officials have been voicing concern in recent days that Syria?s advanced weapons might fall into the hands of militant groups that could use them against Israel.

Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu raised the issue during a Cabinet meeting this week and officials have repeatedly said that any transfer of such weapons outside Syria might trigger a military response.

According to Syrian TV, the research facility and an adjacent building were destroyed in the dawn attack Wednesday. Two people were killed and five were injured, Syrian news reports said.

It was unclear what sort of military research was being carried out in the center, in Jamraya, northwest of the capital. There were no initial reports of chemical contamination in the area.

Syrian officials characterized the center as scientific and said Israel?s ?blatant aggression? proved that it has been behind the effort to oust Assad, according to statement from the Syrian military, carried by the official Syrian Arab News Agency.

?It has become clear to everyone that Israel is the motivator, beneficiary and sometimes executor of the terrorist acts that target Syria and its resistant people,? the statement said.

To date Israel has tried to steer clear of the Syrian conflict, fearing that any actions it might take, such as supporting opposition forces or launching a military strike, might backfire or become a propaganda coup for Damascus.

That very issue might lead the Syrian government, which has long claimed that U.S. and ?Zionist? forces are behind the rebellion against Assad, to accuse Israel of attacking its territory.

Each side in the Syrian conflict has portrayed itself as an implacable enemy of Israel.

There is also concern that an Israeli strike could drag others into the Syrian conflict. Iran, Syria?s close ally, said early this week that any foreign attack against Syria would be regarded as an attack on Iran.

In addition to chemical weapons, Israeli officials have been particularly worried about Syria?s stockpile of Russian-made SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles. If such weapons were obtained by the militant Hezbollah movement, it would weaken Israel?s regional military power and hinder its ability to launch airstrikes in Lebanon.

?The initial speculation was about chemical weapons, but Israel is deeply concerned about Hezbollah acquiring this kind of advanced anti-aircraft missile,?? said Jonathan Spyer, senior research fellow at the Center for Global Research in International Affairs in Herzliya, Israel. ?It would transform Hezbollah?s game and potentially end Israel?s air superiority over Lebanon. This is entirely about Hezbollah, not about Syria.?

Officials in Lebanon denied knowledge of any Israeli attack, but complained that Israeli jets had violated their airspace for several hours, beginning Tuesday afternoon and continuing until Wednesday morning. Though Israel routinely flies over Lebanon for reconnaissance missions to keep a close eye on Hezbollah's arms stocks and movements of weapons, the activity overnight was reportedly heavier than usual.

It is often Israel?s policy to refuse to confirm or deny its activities in the region, partly out of a belief that silence might reduce the pressure on its enemies to react or retaliate.

Many remember him as Fez in the popular sitcom, ?That 70?s Show?, but nowadays actor and activist Wilmer Valderrama has moved forward becoming more than just the shadow behind the funny character.

Beyond his participation in the Fox? successful TV show, the actor, just in the past year, has starred in more than six different TV series, NBC ?s ?Awake? and Fox? ?Raising Hope? begin some of the most prominent.

In the big screen he has also made a name for himself in films like ?From Prada to Nada? and ?Larry Crowne.?

Born in Miami from Colombian and Venezuelan parents but rised between Venezuela and the United States, Valderrama has made sure to keep himself relevant both in the entertainment industry and in the political arena, which he has entered in recent years, through his Latino roots.

?I think it?s, to me, that struggle and that drive that my dad had when I was growing up that really made me understand that we were here to do one thing. And that was to work and to maximize the opportunities that we had,? said the actor to NBC Latino. ?Go to those days makes me appreciate so much more, makes me even more hungry to do more.?

The activist, who serves as a spokesperson for This Shirt Helps, an initiative created to provide aid to different causes, has also worked hard as a co-founder of Voto Latino, an organization dedicated to bringing new and diverse voices into the political process.

Most recently, he was also part of the Latino inauguration celebration in Washington DC, where he hosted along with actress Rosario Dawson.

?I see a future politician here. Wilmer, when you choose to run, make sure I am on your campaign,? said Dawson after his speech.

To celebrate Wilmer Valderrama's 33th birthday, and take some time to remember and just laugh, we have put together a gallery above of some of his best moments as Fez in ?That 70?s Show?.

Forget buying software: You can now rent Microsoft Office (cheap!)

1 hr.

Considering that we can have music, movies, TV shows, Photoshop???even underwear???via some sort of monthly or yearly subscription, it's about time we can finally rent Microsoft Office 365, too.

In exchange for $100 per?year (or $10 per?month), you'll be able to install Office 2013 on up to five PCs, Macs or Windows tablets. You'll have?access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access. Additionally, you'll get an extra?20GB of cloud storage through SkyDrive (on top of the 7GB you already get for free) along with 60 minutes of Skype world calling per month.?

You can still buy Office 2013 the old-school way, though don't expect to see any physical media in the software box; you'll just buy a product code and be sent online to download the actual software. The Home & Student version of that is $140 and is limited to one device (and just Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote); Home & Business is $220 (which includes Outlook as well), and Pro ? with all of the same?apps offered in the subscription ??is $400.

Besides being able to install on up to five devices, there are other benefits to the subscription plan:?Free upgrades to the latest versions of the Office software are included, so you can buy in at any time without worrying about missing the next version. Better still, since the subscription?license covers different types of devices, you don't have to buy a bunch of different versions.?(Besides Mac support, Microsoft has said in the past that this Office 365?license would even?provide you with not-yet-released editions, including a possible iPad version.)

If you have a family with lots going on, it is likely to be a money saver, even when you factor in the deals you get from home/student pricing.?

If you are simply?a power user with a lot of different devices, you'll be able to sync Office 365?documents between them with ease. (And you'll, of course, also be able to share documents quickly, thanks to SkyDrive.)?It doesn't stop with the documents though: Your settings and preferences sync as well. This means that no matter where you sign into Office 365, you'll have the same experience. This is, once again, a great benefit for those who split their time between one too many devices.

Pricing and cloud support aside, the latest Office itself isn't a radical redesign. Everything feels familiar, with some small tweaks. It appears that Microsoft is attempting to reduce the bloat we occasionally experience when it comes to its software suite. Does it succeed? Well, we'll have to use the software for a bit longer to make a solid judgment call in regards to that.

While?the?latest version of the software isn't?lacking anything?from?the?traditional?desktop?view???in fact, our initial impression is that it might be the best version of Office we've used so far???we're still waiting for a finger-friendly tablet version of the?legendary?suite.?Though?it?would?be?a?huge?success?given?the?popularity?of?iPads?and?other?tablets,?Microsoft?isn't?going?to?rush?that?out?in?haste,?because?the?company's?developers?say?they?want?to?get?it?right.

You can snag a free one-month trial of Office 365 through Office.com and we suggest taking advantage of this deal. Odds are that you'll find it feeling comfortable and familiar ? and a little lighter on the checkbook as well.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

The dung beetle as celestial navigator

Only humans, birds, and seals are known to navigate using stars. But the dung beetle does use the Milky Way to chart its path, say scientists.

By Joseph Castro,?LiveScience.com / January 25, 2013

Dung beetles have been shown to use the Milky Way to navigate.Researchers have known for several years that the inch-long insects use the sun or moon as fixed points to ensure they keep rolling dung balls in a straight line - the quickest way of getting away from other beetles at the dung heap. Despite having tiny brains, dung beetles are surprisingly decent navigators, able to follow straight paths as they roll poo balls they've collected away from a dung source. But it seems the insects' abilities are more remarkable than previously believed. Like ancient seafarers, dung beetles can navigate using the starry sky and the glow from the Milky Way, new research shows.

"This is the first time where we see animals using the Milky Way for orientation," said lead researcher Marie Dacke, a biologist at Lund University in Sweden. "It's also the first time we see that insects can use the stars."

After locating a fresh pile of feces, dung beetles will often collect and roll away a large piece of spherical dung. Last year, Dacke and her colleagues discovered the beetles climb on their dung balls and dance around in circles before taking off. This dance is not one of joy, however; the insects are checking out the sky to get their bearings.

"The dorsal (upper) parts of the dung beetles' eyes are specialized to be able to analyze the direction of light polarization ? the direction that light vibrates in," Dacke told LiveScience. So when a beetle looks up, it's taking in the sun, the moon and the pattern of ambient polarized light. These celestial cues help the beetle avoid accidentally circling back to the poo pile, where other beetles may try to steal its food, Dacke said. [Photos of Dung Beetles Dancing on Poop Balls]

In addition to these cues, Dacke and her team wondered if dung beetles can use stars for navigation, just as birds, seals and humans do. After all, they reasoned, dung beetles can somehow keep straight on clear, moonless nights.

To find out, the researchers timed how long dung beetles of the species Scarabaeus satyrus took to cross a circular arena with high walls blocking views of treetops and other landmarks. They tested the insects in South Africa under a moonlit sky, a moonless sky and an overcast sky. In some trials, the beetles were fitted with cardboard caps, which kept their eyes to the ground. Overall, the beetles had a difficult time traveling straight and took significantly longer to cross the arena if caps or clouds obstructed their view of the sky.

HP Horns In on the Chromebook Action

The brief appearance of a spec sheet on HP's online shopping website Monday seemed to indicate the company has joined the list of Microsoft partners offering Chromebooks. The sheet listed details of the HP Pavilion Chromebook 14-c010us PC and carried an advertisement embargo date of Feb. 17. It may have been placed on the Web by accident, but it's also possible it was a marketing ploy.

Fossilized conduits suggest water flowed beneath Martian surface

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Ridges in impact craters on Mars appear to be fossils of cracks in the Martian surface, formed by minerals deposited by flowing water. Water flowing beneath the surface suggests life may once have been possible on Mars.

Networks of narrow ridges found in impact craters on Mars appear to be the fossilized remnants of underground cracks through which water once flowed, according to a new analysis by researchers from Brown University.

The study, in press in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, bolsters the idea that the subsurface environment on Mars once had an active hydrology and could be a good place to search for evidence of past life. The research was conducted by Lee Saper, a recent Brown graduate, with Jack Mustard, professor of geological sciences.

The ridges, many of them hundreds of meters in length and a few meters wide, had been noted in previous research, but how they had formed was not known. Saper and Mustard thought they might once have been faults and fractures that formed underground when impact events rattled the planet's crust. Water, if present in the subsurface, would have circulated through the cracks, slowly filling them in with mineral deposits, which would have been harder than the surrounding rocks. As those surrounding rocks eroded away over millions of years, the seams of mineral-hardened material would remain in place, forming the ridges seen today.

To test their hypothesis, Saper and Mustard mapped over 4,000 ridges in two crater-pocked regions on Mars, Nili Fossae and Nilosyrtis. Using high-resolution images from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the researchers noted the orientations of the ridges and composition of the surrounding rocks.

The orientation data is consistent with the idea that the ridges started out as fractures formed by impact events. A competing hypothesis suggests that these structures may have been sheets of volcanic magma intruding into the surrounding rock, but that doesn't appear to be the case. At Nili Fossae, the orientations are similar to the alignments of large faults related to a mega-scale impact. At Nilosyrtis, where the impact events were smaller in scale, the ridge orientations are associated with each of the small craters in which they were found. "This suggests that fracture formation resulted from the energy of localized impact events and are not associated with regional-scale volcanism," Saper said.

Importantly, Saper and Mustard also found that the ridges exist exclusively in areas where the surrounding rock is rich in iron-magnesium clay, a mineral considered to be a telltale sign that water had once been present in the rocks.

"The association with these hydrated materials suggests there was a water source available," Saper said. "That water would have flowed along the path of least resistance, which in this case would have been these fracture conduits."

As that water flowed, dissolved minerals would have been slowly deposited in the conduits, in much the same way mineral deposits can build up and eventually clog drain pipes. That mineralized material would have been more resistant to erosion than the surrounding rock. And indeed, Saper and Mustard found that these ridges were only found in areas that were heavily eroded, consistent with the notion that these are ancient structures revealed as the weaker surrounding rocks were slowly peeled away by wind.

Taken together, the results suggest the ancient Martian subsurface had flowing water and may have been a habitable environment.

"This gives us a point of observation to say there was enough fracturing and fluid flow in the crust to sustain at least a regionally viable subsurface hydrology," Saper said. "The overarching theme of NASA's planetary exploration has been to follow the water. So if in fact these fractures that turned into these ridges were flowing with hydrothermal fluid, they could have been a viable biosphere."

Saper hopes that the Curiosity rover, currently making its way across its Gale Crater landing site, might be able to shed more light on these types of structures.

"In the site at Gale Crater, there are thought to be mineralized fractures that the rover will go up and touch," Saper said. "These are very small and may not be exactly the same kind of feature we studied, but we'll have the opportunity to crush them up and do chemical analysis on them. That could either bolster our hypothesis or tell us we need to explore other possibilities."

The research was supported by a grant from NASA's Rhode Island Space Grant Consortium and through a NASA subcontract with the Applied Physics Lab at Johns Hopkins University.

NAMM 2013 wrapup Analog synths, DJ gear, a MIDI guitar, mobile peripherals and more

We've managed to pull through music's deafening January gathering just outside of Los Angeles with our hearing still somewhat intact. The last few days have held a wealth of DJ gear from controllers and consoles to portable units. Both Moog and Korg trotted out new analog synthesizers that look quite formidable while remaining rather affordable. As expected, a truckload of wares to outfit a mobile device arsenal were on display from Bluetooth foot controllers to dual-input audio interfaces. And as always, a few surprises crept in as well -- like a MIDI guitar and fully portable, handheld DJ solution. Head on down past the break to get caught up on the happenings that you might've missed as we look for a nice quiet room to recover for a few hours.

MSU Researcher's Cotton Genome Work Published In Nature | USA ...

cotton genome work

STARKVILLE, Miss.? A Mississippi State University researcher is part of an international team that has described the first ?gold-standard? genome sequence for cotton.

Published in the Dec. 20 issue of Nature ? one of the world?s most prestigious scientific journals ? the research is the culmination of a 20-plus year effort in the analysis of cotton genes, chromosomes and their evolution, according to Daniel G. Peterson, director of Mississippi State?s Institute for Genomics, Biocomputing and Biotechnology.

The research consortium includes representatives from most of the world?s major cotton producing countries, and is led by Regents Professor Andrew Paterson of the University of Georgia.

The effort gained momentum in 2007 when a proposal from Paterson, Peterson and others was approved by the United States Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute Community Sequencing Program. A ?gold-standard? sequence was produced for Gossypium raimondii, chosen by the worldwide cotton community to be the first of 50 cotton species to be sequenced as the best model for the New World progenitor of commercially important Upland and Pima cottons.

The IGBB, with funding support from the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES), at MSU and the USDA-ARS augmented the scope and impact of the research by producing ?draft? sequences of a model for the other Upland and Pima (Old World) progenitor, G. herbaceum, as well as the commercially important Upland cotton (G. hirsutum) cultivar ?Acala Maxxa,? and a wild relative, G. longicalyx.

The cotton genome sequence will be invaluable both on the farm and in the biotechnology laboratory, Peterson said.

On the farm, the identification of key cotton genes and their importance will accelerate understanding and provide data crucial to increasing cotton production, quality and sustainability.

In the lab, the comparison of an elite cotton cultivar to its wild ancestors provides new insights into how a ?polyploidy? becomes ?more than the sum of its progenitors.?

All flowering plants have experienced polyploidy, a process by which the entire hereditary blueprint of an organism is doubled. This is the first time that a polyploid plant has been compared to its progenitors over the entire genome, illuminating evolutionary processes salient to all plants and providing a strategy to better understand the genome of many other crops such as canola, wheat and peanut.

Peterson has been involved in the project from its inception.

In 2000 while a postdoc at the University of Georgia, he constructed one of the key molecular resources used in mapping the G. raimondii genome. As a faculty member in Mississippi State?s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, Peterson co-authored the successful 2007 Department of Energy proposal that resulted in initiation of G. raimondii genome sequencing.

As IGBB director, Peterson, in partnership with Brian Scheffler of the USDA-ARS at Stoneville, used an existing IGBB/USDA cooperative agreement to conduct targeted DNA sequencing critical in assembly of the G. raimondii genome. Additionally, the IGBB/USDA team sequenced the three Gossypium genomes to which the G. raimondii reference was compared.

?With a high-quality Gossypium reference sequence in hand, we can quickly assay DNA diversity within and among cotton species. This diversity is the key to generating cotton cultivars suited to various and variable environments, something that is particularly important in light of increasing climate instability,? Peterson noted.

Other IGBB co-authors on the paper were research associate Kurt Showmaker and postdoctoral associate William S. Sanders, both of whom were involved in DNA sequencing, data management, and identification of sequence differences between species.

The cotton sequence is among the highest-quality flowering plant sequences yet produced. Ironically, the sequence revealed it to also be among the most complex of flowering plant genomes, experiencing at least 30-fold multiplication of its genetic complement since its origin from an ancestral flowering plant.

Critical to understanding this complexity was information accumulated over more than 20 years of research funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Cotton Incorporated, the Consortium for Plant Biotechnology Research, Bayer Crop Science, and other public and private agencies.

?This cotton data will help accelerate the study of gene function, particularly cellulose biosynthesis, the understanding of which is fundamental to improved biofuels production,? said Jeremy Schmutz, head of the DOE JGI Plant Program and a faculty investigator at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, who led the effort to sequence and assemble the genome for the JGI.

?In addition, the unique structure of the cotton fiber makes it useful in bioremediation, and accelerated cotton crop improvement also promises to improve water efficiency and reduce pesticide use,? he added.

Cotton production contributes substantially to economies around the globe. The value of cotton fiber grown in the U.S. exceeds $6 billion per year. Cottonseed oil and meal byproducts adds another $1 billion annually.

More than 200,000 domestic jobs are related to cotton production and processing, with an aggregate influence of $35 billion on the annual U.S. gross domestic product.

Don Jones, director of agricultural and environmental research responsible for biotechnology research at Cotton Incorporated, said this Gossypium raimondii sequence will be the foundation for improving commercial cotton.

?This sequencing effort demonstrates that wise investment of grower and importer supplied funding produces cutting-edge research which benefits the entire cotton community. The accomplishment is a cornerstone that will enable us to more thoroughly understand the biology that leads to higher yield, improved fiber quality, and better stress tolerance while reducing inputs used in producing the crop,? Jones said.

Futurity.org ? Lupus drugs carry no strong cancer threat

"People have been wondering for a long time whether the medications were to blame and we finally can reassure them there is no strong lymphoma risk due to drug exposure in lupus patients," says researcher Sasha Bernatsky. (Credit: "tablets" via Shutterstock)

MCGILL (CAN) ? Taking medication to treat lupus does not significantly increase the risk of lymphoma, according to new research.

The study, which is published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases this month, addresses long-standing fears of a link between taking immunosuppressive drugs to treat lupus and cancer.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus, is an autoimmune disease in which the body?s immune system attacks healthy tissue such as the skin, joints, kidneys, and the brain, leading to inflammation and lesions.

The disease affects about 1 in 2000 Canadians, particularly women. Previous research has suggested that lupus patients have an increased risk of developing cancer, particularly lymphoma. Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that occurs when cells called lymphocytes, which usually help protect the body from infection and disease, begin growing and multiplying uncontrollably leading to tumor growth.

?Treatment for Lupus consists largely of immunosuppressive medications, which lower the body?s immune response,? explains Sasha Bernatsky, first and corresponding author of the study, who is a researcher within the Divisions of Clinical Epidemiology and Rheumatology at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre and at McGill University.

According to Ann E. Clarke, director of the lupus clinic and co-leader of the study, the fear of developing cancer among lupus patients has been so great that some were reluctant to take their medication and other stopped altogether.

The international study involved 75 lupus patients with lymphoma from different centers around the world and nearly 5,000 cancer-free lupus patients as a control. Researchers studied most of the drugs commonly used to treat SLE including cyclophosphamide, a drug reserved for severe lupus cases and other chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

The results showed that the risk for lymphoma in lupus patients exposed to cyclophosphamide was less than 0.1 percent per year. In addition, no clear association was observed between lupus disease activity and lymphoma risk.

?People have been wondering for a long time whether the medications were to blame and the results are reassuring, suggesting that most lymphoma cases in SLE are not triggered by drug exposures,? says Bernatsky.

?This is very good news that cancer risk associated with lupus medication is relatively low,? says Louise Bergeron, who has been living with lupus for 12 years. ?It reassures me, especially if I need to take more effective immunosuppressive treatments in the coming years.?

Future research will focus on the genetic profiles of lupus patients and what impact that can have on the interaction between medication exposure and lymphoma risk in lupus.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the National Institutes of Health funded the study.

Prostate cancer cells thrive on stress | Science Codex

Prostate cancer patients have increased levels of stress and anxiety; however, several recent studies have found that men who take drugs that interfere with the stress hormone adrenaline have a lower incidence of prostate cancer. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation George Kulik and colleagues at Wake Forest University examined the relationship between stress and cancer progression in a mouse model of prostate cancer. Kulik and colleagues found that mice that had been subjected to stress (exposed to the scent of a predator) exhibited a significantly reduced response to a drug that induces cancer cell death compared to their unstressed counterparts. Administration of adrenaline also blocked cancer cell death. Conversely, drugs that inhibited adrenaline signaling ablated the effect of stress on prostate cancer. These findings suggest that beta-blockers, which are used for the treatment of high blood pressure and block the effects of adrenaline, could increase the efficacy of anti-cancer therapies. In a companion commentary, Anil Sood and colleagues at MD Anderson Cancer Center discuss additional studies that will be required to move these findings from bench to bedside.

Logitech could dump video-conference arm in revamp

ZURICH (Reuters) - Logitech's chief executive said his company will decide within 90 days whether to sell the video-conferencing arm it bought in 2009 for $405 million after this week writing down the unit's value by more than half.

The LifeSize video conferencing unit has failed to shake up a market dominated by Cisco and Polycom and where Chinese giants Huawei and ZTE are making inroads, while global revenues in the segment have slid as economic uncertainty persists.

Any of the above four companies could be potential buyers for a small niche player in the $3 billion a year market, analysts said.

"This is such a tough market, and that's the biggest driver of the impairment," Logitech's newly anointed CEO Bracken Darrell told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"It's not an easy decision. Is this an asset that makes more sense for us to own or for someone else to own?" Darrell said, adding that the unit was well positioned for success among small and medium sized businesses.

The company also wants to sell its remote controls and digital video security businesses, and to develop more products for smartphones, touch-screen tablets, and for computer gamers.

"It's important to note we're going to shrink the company first and make it more profitable, and then focus on areas where we think we can grow," said Darrell after the company reported lower year-on-year sales for the fifth consecutive quarter.

"PC gaming is an area we haven't grown in because we didn't launch any new products, but we're going to do that now. Mice, keyboards, headsets," said Darrell, a former executive at household appliance maker Whirlpool.

Founded in a farmhouse near the small Swiss town of Romanel-sur-Morges in 1981, Logitech became a rising technology star when it marketed the first modern computer mouse, developed at the nearby Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.

Since then the Swiss-American company has shipped more than a billion mice and introduced a successful line-up of PC accessories including keyboards, cameras and speakers.

After peaking in 2007, Logitech shares have fallen more than 80 percent as the relentless rise of touch-screen tablets and smartphones packed with accessories gnawed away at sales of the mice and other plug-in peripherals Logitech had nurtured.

Darrell rejected the idea that add-on products were unlikely to attract users who increasingly want peripherals such as cameras built in to their smartphones and tablets, and said Logitech's 'mobile boombox' wireless speakers are now one of its top sellers, along with its iPad cover.

"We relaunched a keyboard cover, we call it the other half of the iPad, it's now our top selling product," Darrell said. "What we do seems to fit in this mobile space when we get it right."

Michael Winner: 1935-2013

Michael Winner, the British director of films including 1974's Death Wish, died Monday at his home in London following an illness, The Associated Press reports. He was 77.

The AP confirmed the news with Winner's wife, Geraldine Winner, an ex-dancer who married him two years ago. She called Winner "a wonderful man -- brilliant, funny and generous. A light has gone out in my life."

Winner helmed 30 films including the revenge-themed action picture?Death Wish and its two sequels starring Charles Bronson.

Some of his other films include Some Like It Cool (1962), which he also wrote; The Mechanic (1972), also starring Bronson; Scorpio (1973), toplined by Burt Lancaster; and The Big Sleep, with Robert Mitchum. He once told the AP about his B-movie career:?"If you want art, don't mess about with movies. Buy a Picasso."

Winner also dabbled in media punditry as an acid-tongued restaurant critic for the U.K.'s?Sunday Times, penning the "Winner's Dinners" column. If he especially liked his dinner, he would deem it "historic." A negative review could get him banned from a venue.

Later in life, he also starred in a series of insurance commercials that had a signature catchphrase ("Calm down, dear!") and launched a campaign to build a London memorial honoring fallen police officers.

"Very sad to hear Michael Winner has died," wrote CNN's Piers Morgan on Twitter. "Hilarious, often preposterous, always generous, highly intelligent man. And terrific writer. RIP."

Privacy Visor Blocks Facial Recognition Tech

Growing swarms of facial recognition software can identify people whose faces end up in pictures posted online without their permission. But a new "privacy visor" aims to beat such software by using a dazzling light display to restore a sense of privacy.

The wearable technology takes privacy measures a step beyond the baseball cap and sunglasses worn by celebrities, or even the asymmetrical face paint and hairstyles proposed by a Web designer studying art at New York University. Instead, it embeds LED lighting inside a pair of commercially available goggles to confuse facial recognition software with dazzling near-infrared light "noise."

Any such "noise" changes the software's perception of a person's features to effectively prevent accurate facial recognition, according to Japanese researchers. But the LED lighting does not interfere with the normal vision of the human user.

The Japanese team anticipates its technology could become popular as the growing use of "augmented reality" technology ? such as the futuristic Google glasses ? threatens to chip away even more individual privacy. Augmented reality software could theoretically display a person's identity and known background information for a Google glasses wearer after it manages to identify the person through facial recognition.

Even brick-and-mortar retail stores could begin rolling out facial recognition technology in greater numbers to identify customers and their preferences. That might lead to a cringeworthy "Minority Report" experience of having flashy video ads shouting people's names as they walk by.

The privacy visor could already protect people against being identified unwillingly through pictures shared on Facebook or other social networks. A press release has more details on the work done by Isao Echizen, an associate professor at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo, and Seiichi Gohshi, a professor at Kogakuin University in Tokyo.

A downside of the privacy visor comes from its need for power ? a distinct disadvantage compared with simpler forms of obscuring faces, such as the baseball cap and sunglasses.

Such privacy protection also comes at the fashion cost of resembling a geeky "Tron" fan and possibly raising the curiosity of both bystanders and law enforcement officers. But that may beat the face paint approach of looking like an escapee from the 1980s set of "Blade Runner."

Asian tycoons near final battle in war for Singapore's F&N

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Thailand's third-richest man has raised his stake and takeover offer for Fraser and Neave Ltd to fend off a bid by a group led by Indonesian tycoon Stephen Riady as the battle for the Singapore property and drinks group draws towards a close.

Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi appears to have the advantage going into a formal auction that begins on Monday to decide the fate of the 130-year-old company, which sold its prized Tiger Beer brand to Heineken NV for S$5.6 billion ($4.56 billion) last year.

The Thai gambit values F&N at nearly $11.3 billion and puts the pressure on a consortium led by Riady's Singapore-listed property firm Overseas Union Enterprise Ltd to counter the offer or withdraw from Southeast Asia's largest-ever corporate acquisition.

"This has extended Charoen's advantage. He has an upper hand over OUE because he's only about 10 percent away from gaining majority control of F&N," said Goh Han Peng, an analyst at DMG & Partners Securities in Singapore.

Monday's auction was triggered because neither bidder had declared a final offer by a deadline on Sunday set by Singapore's Securities Industry Council.

Thailand's TCC Assets Ltd, headed by Charoen, raised its offer last week to S$9.55 a share, above the S$9.08 bid by the Overseas Union-led consortium. F&N shares rose 1.4 percent to S$9.71 in early trade on Monday.

Charoen acquired an additional 90.8 million shares, or a 6.3 percent stake in F&N, at S$9.55 each on Friday and another 2.2 million shares on Saturday.

The move raised his total stake - held through TCC Assets Ltd and Thai Beverage PLC - to 40.6 percent including acceptances. Charoen's previous offer was S$8.88 per share.

The offers by Charoen and the Overseas Union group are conditional on getting more than 50 percent of F&N. If Charoen wins, F&N will have to pay a break fee of up to S$50 million to the Overseas Union group.

DRINKS AND PROPERTY

F&N has a property portfolio worth more than S$8 billion and soft drinks, dairy and publishing businesses. It sold Tiger Beer to Dutch brewing giant Heineken in September.

F&N's independent financial advisor JP Morgan has said its sum-of-the-parts valuation is S$8.58 to S$11.56 per share.

In the auction, each side can revise its offer by a minimum of one Singapore cent per share once a day. The revision must be unconditional and in cash.

The process will continue until neither side revises its offer or the securities watchdog stops the auction.

Forbes says Charoen is worth $6.2 billion. His rival, Riady, is also president of the Lippo group founded by his father Mochtar Riady.

Charoen has extended the deadline of his previous offer seven times and the Overseas Union group twice. The multiple extensions have tested the patience of F&N shareholders.

Kirin Holdings Co Ltd , F&N's second-biggest shareholder with a stake of around 14.8 percent, has given its conditional support to the Overseas Union group.

The Japanese brewer will offer to buy F&N's food and beverage business for S$2.7 billion if the Overseas Union group's bid is successful. JP Morgan's valuation of that unit is S$1.88 billion to S$3.82 billion.

If Charoen wins control of F&N, analysts say he is likely to use F&N's distribution network in Singapore and Malaysia to sell his other products and to market F&N brands in Thailand, where he already has an edge.

Egypt police, protesters clash over uprising court case

CAIRO (Reuters) - Police and protesters clashed in the port city of Alexandria on Sunday after a judge investigating the killing of protesters in Egypt's 2011 uprising said he was transferring the case to another court, a court source and a Reuters witness said.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs wanted the court to consider the report of a fact-finding committee investigating the case against six police officers accused of killing unarmed protesters during the 18-day uprising before proceeding with the defendants' hearings.

Tensions are rising ahead of the second anniversary of the 2011 uprising due on January 25, the date of the first day of the demonstrations, which is expected to trigger protests against new President Mohamed Mursi and his Islamist allies.

After a heated argument with the lawyers, the Alexandria Criminal Court judge adjourned the session and said he was transferring the case to the city's appeals court.

Families watching the proceedings on court television in an adjacent hall erupted in anger and fought with police, who beat them back with batons, the witness said.

"The people want to bring down the regime" and "the people want to cleanse the judiciary," the protesters chanted.

Clashes continued outside the courtroom after the police drove them out.

Police fired tear gas and one police car was shown in video footage ramming into a protester in a scene reminiscent of the violent clashes in 2011.

Two police cars were set on fire, the witness said. Security forces detained some protesters, the state news agency MENA said, and dozens of people were injured.

"The interior ministry has not changed. They are thugs!" chanted the protesters outside the court.

Unidentified assailants raided the court after the clashes and set fire to legal papers and documents inside, MENA said.

After years of upheaval, many Egyptians - from the capital Cairo to smaller towns across the country - feel that discontent could again explode into a new wave of unrest.

The economy has been in tatters since the revolt and many say they have yet to see justice dispensed for the deaths of friends and relatives during the uprising as well as the 16-month rule of the army between the ouster of former leader Hosni Mubarak and the election of Mursi.

Frustration with Mursi is rising, with many saying that nothing has changed since he was elected in last June. Disagreements over a new national constitution late last year triggered violent protests, further eroding trust in his government.

Holy Hot Rods! TV's Batmobile may fetch $5 million

23 hrs.

Maybe it was the dual bubble windshields, perfectly framing the heads of Adam West and Burt Ward as they raced to the Gotham City crime scene. Or maybe it was the flared bat wings, edged in orange. Or perhaps it was the ultimate jet exhaust, which flamed like a dragon as the caped crusaders raced out of the Bat Cave.

Whatever the reasons, the original Batmobile remains one of the most revered cars in America. And now the Batmobile ? yes the very same one used on the 1960s Adam West TV show ? is among the more than 1,400 cars expected to be auctioned off at the the 42nd annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale event this weekend.

The price: up to $5 million.

Scottsdale is the car-a-palooza of auto-collecting. And this year, auctioneers say the strong economy, growing investor interest in collectibles, and rare offerings like the Batmobile and a Mercedes once owned by Clark Gable, could push sales total to all-time highs.

The collectible car market isn't just back. It might be bigger than ever.

(Read more: Must-Have Super Car: $1.6 Million and Not Street Legal)

Craig Jackson, the CEO of Barrett-Jackson ? the auto-auction company that launched the event in 1971 ? said this year's sales total may top the company's all-time record of $108 million set in 2007.

"My goal is to beat it this year," he said. It looks like we have a good chance."

One good sign: the lines of credit available to buyers have topped $700 million. Jackson said that every potential bidder has to submit a letter from a bank or lender guaranteeing that a certain amount of cash is available for purchase. He said the total of $700 million in credit lines is likely to hit $1 billion ? meaning buyers have a war-chest of up to $1 billion to spend this weekend.

Scottsdale is mainly a muscle-car scene, with loads of American hot rods and Hemis. But it also has a smattering of Italian exotics, celebrity rides and cars made famous by Hollywood.

The Batmobile is, hands down, the star of the show. There are other Batmobiles out there, of course. But all others were copies of the original, which began life as the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car that made its screen debut in a 1959 film "It Started With a Kiss" with Debbie Reynolds. Then legendary customizer George Barris turned the car into the Batmobile for the TV series. The car was used in the original series as well as the movie adaptation starring Adam West.

Jackson said that all other batmobiles were fiberglass copies made from this original.

"This is the real deal," he said.

Barrett Jackson will be auctioning off the car Saturday. Jackson said that the car is likely to sell for $4 million or more and could easily top $5 million. He said the most likely buyer is "an institution" ? perhaps a museum or movie company linked to the Batman franchise.

"It's one of those wild cards, since we really don't know what it could sell for," he said.

(Read more: Lamborghini Miami Strikes Gold Among Foreign Rich)

Other headliners at Scottsdale include Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes Gullwing, which could sell for millions. A 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider being auctioned off by Gooding & Co. could fetch up to $7 million, while a 1960 Ferrari 250GT SWB Berlinetta auctioned off by RM Auctions could bring in $8 million.

Another piece of Hollywood going up for auction is the Dukes of Hazzard stunt car, which was used in the popular 1980s TV series. The "General Lee" ? a 1969 Dodge Charger ? could fetch more than $60,000 when auctioned off by Bonham's.

Also on the block from Bonhams: the car used in the infamous tollbooth scene in "The Godfather," in which Sonny Corleone gets shot. He didn't survive, but the car did. James Caan pulled up to the tollbooth in this car, but there aren't any bullet holes. A different car was riddled with the bullets. There's no estimate on how much the 1941 Lincoln Continental Coupe might fetch.

Tips on How to Plan the Perfect Vacation

Travel is a hobby for some and a business necessity for others. But regardless of your reason for getting from one place to another, there are ways to make it easier and more pleasant, and ways for it to bring stress into your life. Try these great tips for making travel time into a more enjoyable time.

To avoid supporting animal cruelty while traveling, be sure to check out your travel destinations in advance, and be careful not to make arrangements to see or participate in any activities that may involve animal cruelty. If you are working with a travel agency, make sure they understand your reasons for refusing to pay for this sort of activity.

One way to increase the safety and security of your home while you are away on a trip is to install either interior or exterior lights that operate on a timer. These lights will automatically turn on at designated times, such as nightfall, and give the impression that the house is occupied when actually, it is vacant.

When traveling, always be prepared to have things stolen. Make advance photocopies of all of your important papers. You can even upload electronic scans of these documents for easy access while traveling. The local American embassy can assist you in contacting those at home who can wire you emergency funds or help in replacing your passport, but not much else.

Bring back toiletries from the hotels that you stay at while traveling. Things like soap, shampoo and lotion can be some of the best souvenirs of your vacation, and they are completely free. Since your room rate includes the cost of these items, don't feel bad for taking them home with you. Use them to remember the great time you had while you were away.

Do not bother packing your entire makeup case. Makeup cases are bulky and often take up a lot of room. Instead, put any makeup you anticipate needing for your trip in a simple ziplock bag. Put it in your suitcase's side pocket. This will save a lot of room when packing.

Ask the hotel for an electronic air filter when you are traveling. Many rooms have windows that will not open, and they have a tendency to smell a little funny. An air filter does a great job of moving and cleaning the air, allowing you to relax and feel comfortable in your room. It also provides some background noise that could be helpful as well.
